Lyric House staff and students are successful because today songwriting is a creative, highly accessible tool to reach San Francisco's high risk youth. Our target community uses music to take a break from daily challenges, to bond with other youth, to enjoy life and to share their stories with their communities. We take music and use it to inspire students to improve their lives academically, creatively and behaviorally. As teachers, it is incredible to watch our students grow with pride and self-confidence as they gain new skills and hone their writing and musical skills.

We teach because we love it, even when there are days or weeks when our students struggle with anger and lack of participation. We are a racially diverse group of teachers excited to learn how to be more compassionate and effective music and literacy facilitators. We have worked in many schools and outreach organizations and yet we choose to work with Lyric House, volunteering at least half our time because we know our projects actually help youth access and use their potential. It is our collective potential that gives us purpose and gives our youth alternative futures.
